Key Concepts
This section aims at explaining certain terms and concepts used throughout Seatsurfing.
Space
A space is any kind of bookable unit: For example a conference room, a desk, or a garage.
A space can have optional attributes (see below).
Area
An area is a floor which contains one or more spaces.
An area has a unique name and a floor plan.
An area can have optional attributes (see below).
Attribute
An attribute is an additional piece of information which can be attached to either spaces or areas.
Types of attributes:
- Number (i.e. "Number of available seats" for a conference room)
- Boolean or Yes/No (i.e. "Big screen available")
- Text (i.e. "Special Notes")
Role
A "Role" is a named set of permissions, defined by an organization's administrators. A user may hold any number of roles and has the highest access any of them grants.
Permission
A "Permission" names one functionality — users, groups, areas, the audit log — and is granted at a level: no access, read only, limited, or full access. Not every level is meaningful for every functionality, so a role only offers those that are.
Permissions govern administrative access. They sit on top of a baseline every user has regardless of their roles: managing their own bookings, buddies and preferences, and seeing the spaces they can book.
